1 I tried to put something of the feel of the place into a novel of mine, The Anti-Death League.

2 When a young lady writer from the London Sunday Times interviewed Behan in Dublin once, he responded to the offer to name his pre-lunch drink (at Jammet’s or the Shelbourne) by saying politely, ‘I’ll have three bottles of gin, please, and would you get two of them put in the car?’ It is of some interest that, at a similar encounter the previous day with Liam O’Flaherty, all went swimmingly until the brandy-and-coffee stage, when the author of The Informer told the interviewer in a confidential tone, ‘I’ve got your number now. You’re a fockan agent for Scotland fockan Yard.’ He was described by his contemporary Sean O’Faolain as an ‘inverted romantic’.

3 Sadly, he never will now. George died on 3 November 1990.
